ClubTest 2015: Brainstorm Happy Mallet Putter
Brainstorm Happy Mallet Putter
Category: Midsize Mallet Putters
WE TESTED: 34”, 35” shaft lengths
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: The Happy gives you the ability to change loft (1°, 3.5° or 6°), lie angle, weight and offset.
DISTANCE CONTROL: No real hot or cold areas—the ball comes off pretty much the same way no matter where you catch it; it’s easy to control speed and distance; all the adjustability doesn’t change the way it performs—steady and consistent no matter how you set it.
FEEL: The Happy putter has a surprisingly responsive face, given the numerous pieces on the head; nicely balanced and weighted; testers like the heavy head, and a few applaud the flattened, oval grip; a soft feel and crisp sound at impact, and there’s no jarring on slight mis-hits.
LOOK: There’s nothing currently on the market that compares to the Happy putter—the futuristic look alone demands that you give it a try; most guys are impressed by the way the color scheme, shape and lines combine to frame the ball at address.
The look takes getting used to, and some guys never do; it requires a little bit of trial (and, possibly error) to determine the right specs; a few testers find that the bells and whistles block the alignment aid and could compromise feel.
BOTTOM LINE: The Brainstorm Happy is a tinkerer’s dream that allows adjustments for loft, lie, head weight and offset. While not for the traditionalist, the club’s custom features are unparalleled.
