ClubTest 2014: Bettinardi BB1 Putter

Bettinardi BB1 Putter
Michael Chini

Bettinardi BB1
Category: Blade Putters
Price: $300
WE TESTED:
35” shaft length
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: The soft carbon steel head has an elegant honeycomb face pattern.

PROS
DISTANCE CONTROL:
The BB1 is a reliable performer—the heavyish head helps to get lag putts to the hole using a somewhat normal stroke; requires a pure motion and clean impact for best results.
FEEL: Excellent response on center hits; usable feedback lets you know what you’ve done on off-center strikes; tacky grip keeps the hands and club well connected; nice weighting— the putter rolls the ball very well with little effort.
LOOK: One of the top-rated models; gorgeous craftsmanship that fits the eye; the milled pattern on the face is stylish and tasteful; a straightforward, useful alignment aid.

CONS
You get what you deserve without a tremendous amount of help—delivers harsh penalties and inconsistent roll on marginal strokes; a handful of dissenters believe it looks a bit plain at address; a few testers don’t get as much precise feedback as they want.

BOTTOM LINE: Built for purists who favor feedback over shot correction. This one rewards pure putters who strike it well. Be sure to bring your “A” game, because slight off-center hits will concede some performance.
