ClubTest 2014: Adams Tight Lies Tour Fairway Woods
Adams Tight Lies Tour Fairway Woods
Category: Better-Player Fairway Woods
WE TESTED: 14.5° and 18° with Aldila Tour Blue graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: The “Cut-Thru” slot contributes to a hotter face, while a tri-level sole improves turf interaction. The low profile, “upside-down” design creates a larger effective hitting area low on the face.
PLAYABILITY: Our testers can shape shots both ways with relative ease; the Tight Lies Tour provides a strong, penetrating ball flight; shots from the rough, and even from fairway bunkers, jump off the face; it’s also a good performer off the tee.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: Off-center hits stay on line fairly well and still go a good ways; this one consistently finds the short grass from the tee box; does a solid job of mitigating sidespin on slight misses.
DISTANCE: Nice combination of carry and roll; quality shots net good yardage off the tee.
FEEL: Pleasing click with plenty of pop at impact; the weighty head tells you where it is throughout the swing and provides confidence from tough lies; the ball leaps off the face on center hits.
LOOK: Compact clubhead easily gets behind the ball in the fairway, rough, or sand; a clean, refined appearance despite plenty of hidden technology; matte finish is conservative but appealing.
Some testers find that it’s not the most forgiving, particularly on toe hits; trajectory isn’t as high as a few guys would like; it’s not a standout performer in any one area.
BOTTOM LINE: The Tight Lies Tour is proficient at shaping shots for those with the ability to do so. A boring trajectory penetrates the wind and creates ample roll.
