ClubTest 2013: Adams Idea Tech V4 Hybrid Irons
Adams Idea Tech V4 Hybrid Irons
Category: Max Game-Improvement Irons
Price: $799, steel; $899, graphite
WE TESTED: 4-6 hybrids, 7-GW with Mitsubishi Rayon Bassara graphite shaft.
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: Tungsten weights in the heel and toe contribute to higher-launching shots and added forgiveness. The hybrids feature a "Velocity Slot" on the crown and sole to enhance the club’s trampoline effect.
PLAYABILITY: High and straight is the norm, although draws are easily manufactured; superb from the rough.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: Hybrids have some "stick-em" on well-struck shots; short irons fly high and soft and don’t deviate much from target line.
DISTANCE CONTROL: No fear of carrying hazards on the course with high-launching, big-hitting hybrids; heavy heads deliver a formidable blow on thin shots to help preserve distance.
FEEL: High-quality feedback and response for such a meaty head; impact is a comfortable thud with a perceptible feel of compression.
LOOK: Noticeable mass behind the clubface is confidence-inspiring at address; "velocity slot" on top of the hybrids serves as a good alignment aid.
Short irons are a bit clunky and lack pure touch around the greens; some testers say the high ball flight, particularly in short irons, can be a detriment.
BOTTOM LINE: One of the top performers in its category. This easy-to-hit, responsive set offers exceptional accuracy and distance control.
