Founders Club of Pawleys Island is the newest golf course on the southern Grand Strand. Built on the site of the former Sea Gull Golf Club, golf course architect Thomas Walker was brought in to completely redesign the course within its original corridors. The result is a breathtakingly new, modern gem that hosts thousands of guests and locals alike year after year. The new course opened in 2007.

Founders Club is one of the southern Grand Strand’s most interesting places to play golf. It is the only course in the area that sports Emerald Bermuda greens, many of which are elevated and require a deft touch to maneuver. Walker eschewed large areas of long rough in favor of sandy waste areas and pine needles, which provide a better chance for recovery in case of wayward shots. The back nine features numerous holes that use this feature, such as the fabulous long par four 14th hole, which doglegs to the right around a stand of pines and heaves upward to a green sloped steeply from back to front. Players often try to cut the corner by too much and end up with a choice between pitching out to the fairway and threading the proverbial needle in order to reach the green in regulation.

Founders Club’s off-course facilities are adequate and well-appointed. The course does not have a driving range but players are able to warm up by hitting balls into a large net. The practice putting and chipping green is broad and undulating making for many potential pre- or post-round putting contests. Practice bunkers also ring the putting surface, affording the opportunity to practice one’s sand game, which will come in handy. Founders Club is also available for golf outings, from informal small gatherings to full-fledged corporate days.
