Escape the bright lights of the Grand Strand and the development of golf communities and get back to nature and the basics at Black Bear Golf Club.

Located in Longs, a small town just inland from North Myrtle Beach, this rural setting provides a peaceful and tranquil round of Grand Strand golf in one of the most beautiful environments among the 100 golf layouts on the Strand. The extra drive in the car is worth the extra room to drive the ball on this 6,787-yard, par-72 gentle beast.

Designed by renowned architect Tom Jackson, who built five golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area and was known for creating masterpieces that flow seamlessly with the natural terrain, Black Bear is nestled amid a mix of woodlands and wetlands that make up most of the scenery, including 23 finger lakes and dense pine and hardwood forests.

Carrying a 72.9 course rating and a slope of 137, Black Bear features extensive mounding and pot bunkers to add to the degree of difficulty. But the wide fairways and drivable greens make, this 18-hole layout is very fair and rewarding for those who can keep the ball in-bounds and use every club in the bag to hit the correct shots.

Formerly known as Myrtle West Golf Club, this semi-private, parkland-style layout received a name change as well as a major upgrade in 2006, reworking many of the holes and replacing the greens with new Championship Bermuda greens. The makeover totally redefined the golf experience while staying true to Jackson's original vision.

The secret has gotten out about Black Bear among both local and visiting golfers alike, who rave about the courses playability and affordability, giving golfers more bang for their buck. The course is immaculately maintained and the Black Bear staff is known for its Southern hospitality and making golfers feel right at home.

Black Bear is loaded with risk-reward opportunities for those willing to brave the woods and water, and nowhere is that truer than the No. 18 signature hole. This 533-yard par 5 gives golfers one last chance to make a birdie or even an eagle, which requires hitting a pair of fairways and a perfectly placed shot over the water into the cup.

Relive that memorable shot on the finishing hole from the porch of the plantation-style clubhouse, which features a 19th hole and pro shop. A driving range and practice green give golfers the chance to warm up before their rounds or work out the kinks on their swings at the end of the day. Pro lessons can be arranged in advance.
