Experience golf in the English countryside without leaving the South Carolina Low country at Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club, near Myrtle Beach.
Located in the rural Conway community, about 15 miles inland from Myrtle Beach, Shaftesbury Glen is a bit off the beaten path compared to most of the Grand Strand's 100 golf courses. But, as both local and visiting golfers have discovered since the course's opening in 2001, its well worth the drive to play this parkland-style classic.
The brain child of club owner Paul Himmelsbach and renowned designer Clyde Johnston, Shaftesbury Glen was the byproduct of their shared love for courses like Augusta National, Winged Foot and the traditional layouts of the
British Isles. The result is a 6,935-yard, par-72 masterpiece that keeps golfers coming back time after time to play the hidden gem.
The short drive through the country sets the scene for a round that is far removed from the bright lights and busy golf communities farther inland. Featuring dense woodlands and pristine wetlands along the adjoining Waccamaw River, Shaftesbury Glen is set on scenic farmland that makes for an enjoyable day regardless of your score.
Golfers are welcomed by immaculately kept fairways and A1 Bentgrass greens that are sure and true.
With a course rating of 71.5 and a slope of 135, Shaftesbury Glen presents all handicaps with a nice challenge and a fair test of golf. Wide open fairways provide the perfect proving grounds for those who like to grip it and rip it, but keeping the ball in play and avoiding the deep pot bunkers that dot the course are at a premium.
Featuring an endless supply of bunkers and natural water hazards, golfers must traverse some trouble to reach the elevated greens. But play the course right and you will find yourself facing birdie and even eagle putting opportunities thanks to expansive fairways and smooth greens. Despite the mounded berms that guard the borders and an almost unavoidable number of pot bunkers, Shaftesbury Glen is known for its playability.
Golfers also will be impressed with Shaftesbury Glen outside the ropes, as well. A beautiful, Olde English clubhouse features The Pub, which offers provides excellent food and drinks in a fun, friendly environment, and the fully stocked pro shop has everything for your golfing needs. Pro lessons, a driving range and putting greens are available.
