Thistle Golf Club, West

Thistle Golf Club in Sunset Beach, N.C., just a short drive up the coast from Myrtle Beach, is like taking a trip back in time and place to the early 1800s in Scotland, the birthplace of golf. Enjoy the finest in country club living with a luxury resort lifestyle, surrounded by an idyllic nature preserve, acres of wildflowers wetlands, and rare wildlife.

Architect Tim Cate designed the tradition-rich links layout featuring 27 holes of mounded fairways, deep bunkers, natural water hazards and waste areas that must be traversed to reach the well-manicured, bentgrass greens.

The course is a perfect marriage of the man-made and the natural, with pristine wetlands, maritime forests and wildlife blending with the landscape of lovely bridges and a new clubhouse inspired by an ancient Scottish castle.

Thistle has become very popular among golfers of all skill levels. In addition to a memorable round of golf in a beautiful setting, stop by the Clubhouse to enjoy the rich heritage with all of the exhibits from golf of yesteryear and grab a bite at the authentic Scottish pub that is one of the best 19th holes on the Grand Strand.

The Thistle Clubhouse is a crown jewel and is unsurpassed in the region. It is designed to mimic the traditional Scottish design club that had grew over a 100 year period beginning in the early 1800's. The right wing is finished with quarried stone used commonly towards the mid 1800's; and the left side of the building was constructed with red brick which became the prominent building material in Scotland towards the end of the century. This masterpiece is enhanced by solid wood beams, clay chimney pots, copper roofing accents, and time period details.

One of the coolest things about the interior is that it boasts many antiquities salvaged from Old World European buildings and classically paired with the best in modern conveniences. Different pieces were acquired through the USGA Artifacts Association and many private collections to help tell the story of golf and how it was played by Thistle members on the original Links of Leith.

The club exhibits many of the relic trophy clubs and score-cards from the time period, as well as the original book, Rules of the Thistle Golf Club, published in 1824.

After a long day of golf and sometime enjoying the exhibits Thistle has on display, it is time to enjoy the authentic Scottish Pub. It has become a very popular spot to kick back and enjoy your favorite pint, a glass of wine, or a delicious meal. It is the perfect place to gather with neighbors and friends to share life experiences and good company.

Thistle Golf Club also boasts a private member lounge and private patio equipped with two fireplaces and amazing views. If you have a meeting or clients in town you can have it in the private boardroom and dining room that can be set for 18.
