PHOTO: Empire State Building lights up in honor of Arnold Palmer’s 90th birthday

Tuesday marked what would have been golf legend Arnold Palmer’s 90th birthday. A full day of events was planned to commemorate Palmer’s life, and tributes poured in from around the golf world. But the culminating moment was when the Empire State Building was lit up in honor of Arnie.

The iconic skyscraper in midtown Manhattan lit up on Tuesday night in the signature colors of Palmer’s umbrella logo: red, white, yellow and green.

The official Twitter account of the Empire State Building tweeted a photo of the building in full Arnie technicolor, along with the message, “Happy 90th Anniversary to the @ArniesArmyCF! We’re celebrating their vision of a #LifeWellPlayed for future generations with lights in red, yellow, white & green this evening.”

Palmer, who died in 2016 at the age of 87, did more than any other person to popularize golf, and especially professional golf.

One of the most-talked about Palmer tributes on Tuesday came from Phil Mickelson. Mickelson posted a video on Tuesday in honor of Palmer, relating how impressed he was when Palmer sent hours shaking hands and thanking volunteers after practice rounds at the 1994 U.S. Open, Arnie’s last.

“Little gestures like that always stood in the back of my mind about what a great man he was because he was so appreciative of all the things that people have done for him and have given him,” Mickelson said.

Palmer’s official Instagram account noted that the Empire State Building was illuminated in Palmer’s colors “to commemorate his philanthropic efforts and the Arnold & Winnie Palmer Foundation. The city that never sleeps under the light of a legend. Thank you, New York.”
