Yale University has been ranked as one of the top courses in the U.S.by Golf Magazine's panel of experts.
When it opened in 1926, Seth Raynor's course was the most expensive ever built in the United States thanks to the rocky ground it was created on. The fairways are wide, but the bunkers are very deep, so you had better find the short grass.
While some would say that changes over the years have detracted from the original routing and design, the 215-yard par-3 9th hole remains a classic from the Golden Age of golf. From the tee, which is elevated about 60 feet above the green, players must hit over Griest Pond to a Biarritz-style green (named for the town in France where this type of green complex first appeared). A 5-foot-deep gully divides the green in half. Players on the wrong side are forced to putt through, or pitch over, the gully.
The course is open to Yale students, faculty and alumni, and their guests. For more information on the Yale University Golf Course, go to yalegolfcourse.com.Design - Golf Course at The Course at Yale
