FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — The opening day of the U.S. Open will test both the skill and patience of players, thanks to more rain than Bethpage Black could handle.

Rain interrupted first-round play less than 3 1/2 hours into the round, and the United States Golf Association said during the delay that it's hoping for a ``three- to five-hour'' window for play to resume in the afternoon.

That means many, if not all, with afternoon starting times Thursday may simply not begin play until Friday.
