LONDON (AP) — Tom Lewis, the youngster who rose to prominence by taking a share of the first-round lead at this year's British Open, has turned professional.

A week after helping Britain & Ireland to victory over the United States at the Walker Cup, Lewis has brought an end to his impressive amateur career.

In a statement released by the IMG agency, which has signed Lewis as a client, the 20-year-old Englishman says Friday he's excited to get out there and see how he measures up.

Lewis will play his first event as a professional at next week's Austrian Open.

Named after Tom Watson, Lewis played alongside the American great in the first round at the British Open in July and shot a 5-under 65 to share the first-round lead with Thomas Bjorn.
